![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Now while I have indeed and very much enjoyed the sweetly descriptive, often delightfully esoteric marriage of text and images of Molly Bang's The Paper Crane (that real and palpable but also glowingly imaginative sense of magic and that being of a kind and generous spirit will or rather can engender and give many types of wonderful and unexpected rewards), I do have to admit that I did and still do kind of feel as though I am for one only getting part of the story with The Paper Crane and that for two and yes for me much more importantly from a folkloric and academic point of view, that the complete and total lack of an author's note with regard to cultural background, with regard to which folktale or folktales Molly Bang has made use of (or might have made use of) to compose The Paper Crane really does bother and rather massively annoy me. ![]() ![]() There is little information available as to why TS was abandoned in the following decades. Both authors considered TS to be a boon to mankind, as it greatly reduced postoperative and postpartum complications from anesthesia by chloroform, ether and compressed gasses. ![]() Written by an MD well experienced in both general surgery and obstetrics (Bertha van Hooten), the book also contains several accounts of the mother's psychological state by the co-author and psychologist, Elisabeth Ross Shaw. The most frequent example of the method was the mother's surprise, learning that she had a new baby when she woke up hours later. ![]() This was followed by additional injections of scopolamine alone to ensure that the mother would have no memory of the pain of her struggle. The obstetric method was called Twilight Sleep (TS), because the mother was put into a kind of sleep as soon as her labor began with an injection of the morphine and scopolamine mixture. ![]() The book describes in great informative detail the use of scopolamine and morphine both in general surgery and obstetrics, of which the latter would be of particular interest to anyone born by this procedure in the US between 1900 and the late 1960s. This book is a reprint of an historica landmark published in 1915 and looks as if it was a ripoff of Google's acquisition of the book in its library program, but published by a company having an obscure contact address. ![]() ![]() ![]() If you die without loss, you are eternal. He insisted on living in a harmonious and spontaneous manner rather than exploiting the earth and other beings for self-aggrandizement. Perhaps a legendary figure, Laozi’s influence on Chinese history, thought, and culture has nevertheless been substantial. Lǎozǐ ( Laozi or Lao Tzu) was a naturalistic philosopher-sage attributed with founding the Chinese way of life known as Daoism, and credited with having written the Dao De Jing (Tao Te Ching), though both claims have been historically disputed by scholars. His latest novel is the story of a disenfranchised teenager named Shy making a morbid pilgrimage to take his own life. “I don’t have to steer my ship back towards what I want to do.” “I’ve been lucky enough that that’s always been my starting point: making the work I love,” he says. The now-bestseller has been translated into 27 languages and adapted into a celebrated stage play.ĭespite his debut’s unexpected success, the pressure hasn’t changed how Porter writes. His 2015 debut novel Grief Is The Thing With Feathers, about a father and his two sons mourning the loss of their matriarch in the company of a cacophonous crow, was bought by its American publisher for £1,000. It was, says Porter, “the first time I’d done no drawings or research”, but he has grown used to the unexpected. ![]() ![]() ![]() If their parents declare war, they will be killed.
